Living with colleagues

Depending on the people you’re staying with, living with your colleagues can be either a fun experience or a complete nightmare. Either way, you’ll have to adapt to accommodate the other people you live with. Here are some tips on keeping your residence hassle-free.

Don’t be selfish with resources

If you’re staying in a shared house or boarding room, you’ll also have to share things like a common room or bathroom. Try not to be selfish and hog these resources, and you’ll notice that your housemates will be more consenting to your requests.

Maintain a level of peace and quiet

Some people prefer to study in peace and quiet, but others have a need for music to be playing while they read their notes. This is understandable, but you always have to remember the people you’re sharing the house with may not follow the same practices you do. Try your best not to disturb your housemates with loud noise. If you’re planning to throw a small party or have a gathering where you know the level of noise will be high, check with your housemates first to see if they can accommodate your needs for the night.

Practice the same type of behaviour you expect

If you want your housemates to cooperate with you, you’ll need to first practice what you preach. You can’t expect your housemates to clean up after your mess, so make sure you follow the rules. If you keep things in line, then it’s reasonable for you to ask others to do the same.
