Higher Education in Government Universities

Currently, there are 15 State Universities in Sri Lanka, all of which provide free education, although admission is highly competitive due to the large number of applicants from around the country. Admission is based on GCE Advanced Level examination results and the process is overseen by the University Grants Commission of Sri Lanka. Students who are unable to gain admission into State Universities commonly enrol with the Open University of Sri Lanka, a national university that offers qualifications up to PhD. Level through Distance Mode Learning.
