Overview

Colombo Institute of Research & Psychology (CIRP) together with University of Hertfordshire (UH) has paved the way for the students in Sri Lanka as well as neighboring countries to obtain an internationally recognized and an accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology for a fraction of the usual cost.

University of Hertfordshire is one of the top modern British Universities with four faculties, fourteen academic schools and three research institutes. UH currently provides education to more than 24 500 students and more than 2000 are international students representing 85 countries, and in 2012 it’s alumni exceeded 165 000 past students.

The psychology department of UH is considered one of the largest in England with an excellent reputation as a research oriented institution. This reputation attracts more than 500 students for each intake making it one of the most popular and demanded places for psychology education in UK as well as in the world.

Recognition Agreement

In 2011 Colombo Institute of Research & Psychology entered into a recognition agreement with the Psychology Department of the University of Hertfordshire, that recognized the Higher National Diploma offered by CIRP as a direct entry qualification to the final year of the B.Sc.(Hons) in Psychology offered by UH.

Agreement was signed between the two institutes following a visit by the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences Dr.Lyn and the Head of the Psychology department Dr. Angela Holland. Upon careful evaluation of the curriculum, student facilities and qualifications of teaching staff; UH decided to approve the recognition agreement, that gives HND offered by CIRP the equal academic level of the first two years of education at their university.

Benefits of the transfer program

Completing the HND which is only 18 months at CIRP and transferring to UH for the final year is beneficial to students in a number of ways. Currently all top UK universities charge a minimum of 9 500 pounds as tuition fee per year apart from the living & travelling expenses. Thus students can save up to 3 million Sri Lanka rupees for each year they study in Sri Lanka. This means CIRP students who transfer to UH for the final year can save a minimum of 6 million, while obtaining the same qualification as an internal student of University of Hertfordshire. Another benefit is that they will be graduating 6 months early as the degree completion takes only 2 ½ years in this path compared to a traditional 3 year degree. Most students spend the money and time they save through this track to spend for their M.Sc. or Ph.D qualifications.

Students also have the opportunity of transferring to UH at the end of the HND Level 2, after studying for one year at CIRP. They are entitled to enter the second year of the B.Sc. (Hons) in Psychology program. This is specially popular among students who wish to obtain a membership into the British Psychological Society. membership, since BPS only allows membership to individuals who have completed at least two years of Psychology education within UK.
