MASTER OF BUSINESS ADMINISTRATION DEGREE (MBA) AWARDED BY UNIVERSITY OF DERBY (UK), RECOGNISED BY UNIVERSITY GRANTS COMMISSION SRI LANKA

Students who complete the Edexcel BTEC Level 7 Extended Diploma in Strategic Management & Leadership are eligible to DIRECTLY enter into the Research Stage of the MBA programme. On completion of the Level 7, students are awarded 120 credits out of 180 credits necessary to fulfill the requirements of the MBA. The balance 60 credits will be awarded on successful submission of the Research.

The Research Stage involves students conducting a ‘Business Impact Study’ which will be extensively supported by on-line resources from the University as well as direct assistance from HRMI to accomplish the research work. The Business Impact Study represents a major learning experience for students by providing an opportunity to pursue in considerable depth and with suitable academic rigour a specific area of organisational intervention that is of interest, building on a preliminary investigation which has involved the use of relevant concepts, models and paradigms to understand a business issue.

Students can choose to examine an area or field of study which may not be available in formal modules, which needs extensive research or is best pursued on an individual basis. It also offers the chance for personal development, enhancing student’s existing skills of self-reliance, planning and organization, time management, communication, written expression and critical analysis as well as developing new practical research skills.

Each Business Impact Study will be supervised by an appropriate Supervisor, appointed by Derby Business School. Prior to starting the full study, a Business Impact Proposal will be individually negotiated.

The final work will be independently assessed by two tutors, one of whom will be the Supervisor. It will be formed from two reports – one which seeks to explain the business issue from an academic perspective and provides recommendations and one which reports on the implementation and impact of those recommendations.

The study is a three-part initiative:

1. A Research Proposal outlining your business issue and how you intend to examine it.

2. A Research Project designed to understand the business issue and develop a set of recommendations to resolve the investigated issue

3. An impact study whereby your recommendations are implemented and the impact of these evaluated
