Unlike other tourists attractions, surfing is not something that could be done in every beach and sand. Perfect surfing requires rolling sea and breaking waves with most suitable direction of wind. Starting from the boulders and sand banks in the shore to the rain fall of a particular area to the height of the waves and ride to the climate and temperature to the offshore wind and accessibility, the features that decide whether a spot as a surfing spot or not play an important role in this water sports activity.

The teardrop isle of Indian Ocean which is also known as Ceylon or Serendib is one such country that contains several dedicated surfing spots that are highly liked by the international Surfers who enjoy the briskly splashing waves and smartly blowing wind in the certain beaches of Sri Lanka. The interesting twists and turns in the surfing make the passionate Surfers to go in search of various surfing spots all around world to find the perfect temperament to enjoy the adventure.

In terms of Sri Lanka one such surfing spot which is annually visited by many advanced level Surfers or die-hard Surfers is Arugam Bay which is renowned as one of world’s best ten surf points. The point breaks in Arugam Bay include Pottuvil Point, Ullah Point, Surf Point, Peanut Farm Point, and Crocodile Rock. The ideal season for Surfing in Arugam bay is the season between April to October.

Apart from Arugam Bay there are various other surfing destinations in Sri Lanka that can treat the adventure seekers with exceptional thrilling experiences too. The range of other surfing spots in South Western part of the country includes Hikkaduwa, Wewala and Narigama. In the Southern part of the country includes Kabalana, Midigama, Weligama, Mirissa and Matara.

In the Southern part of the country there are plenty of places that pick up the swell and provide up to 3ft of high waves that are just perfect for quality surf. During the periods of December to March the sea is ideal for a spacious and hassle free surfing in South though generally Sri Lankan surfing season is known between Aprils through to October. During such off seasons also some of these Southern seas are approached by certain Surfers visiting Sri Lanka knowing the quality and the nature of the waves. Most of the times the waves in the south and west parts of Sri Lanka are breaking on sand powerfully. However they are manageable and easy to get into.

Renting surf boards, finding a suitable accommodation as per the budget, finding a guide or an instructor to get familiarised with the local places and types of surfing, arranging transportation to the surf spot and many other necessary logistical supports are widely available near the surf locations.
