Overview

Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC), a pioneer in tertiary education in Sri Lanka currently has a variety of programmes for the youth at offer. Students are provided with numerous options to commence and complete their Bachelor level studies from University of London (UK) while in Sri Lanka, and a unique pathway to Deakin University (Australia) commencing the programme in Colombo and transferring to Australia to complete the degree studies.

Why study at Royal Institute of Colombo (RIC)?

RIC is the pioneer in private higher education Institute in Sri Lanka, and the only ‘‘Affiliate Centre’’ to University of London, London School of Economics (LSE) U.K. This year RIC celebrates 25th year partnership with University of London. RIC was awarded the prestigious affiliate centre status considering its history, the graduates produced so far with excellent results, academic carder and facilities including resourceful library and state of the art IT lab. RIC library is one of the best libraries a private institution has, as it includes all the essential and further reading books recommended by University of London. Apart from that, the facilities available for co-curricular activities such as swimming , basketball, etc. are also available for students.

What are the degrees offered at RIC?

Currently, RIC offers 15 different degrees and 3 diplomas from University of London in fields of Economics, Mathematics, Management, Finance, International Relations and Sociology. Further, RIC has entered a unique collaboration with Deakin University, Australia offering 4 different pathway programmes in Engineering, Bio-medical Science, Science and Information Technology.

University of London degrees can be completed in Sri Lanka, and the development of the curriculum, examination paper setting and assessments are done by the University of London academics in the U.K. Deakin University degrees are completed in Australia, the students enrolled for the RIC Deakin pathway programme, study one or two years at RIC and the final two years are completed in Australia. The Deakin curriculum to paper moderation and final evaluation is done by Deakin led academics and examiners in Australia. The successful completion of the two years in Australia allows the graduates to apply for post study visa and Permanent Residence in Australia.

Generally, the undergraduate students of the RIC represent mostly the Sri Lankans, although there is a sharp increase in the share of foreign students in the recent past.

The local student population is multi-cultural. As the RIC undergraduates represent a mixed community, they learn together, respect each other and, strive to promote social harmony.

 

RIC teaches for a wide range of Degree and Diploma programmes of the University of London as well as RICs own foundation programme. You are able to select your study programme from a wide range of options according to your qualifications and requirements.

RIC strives to create and maintain a conducive and productive academic environment for both students and academic staff.

Academic staff

The academic staff of RIC comprise of both permanent and visiting lecturers. The permanent staff has Senior Lecturers, Lecturers and Assistant Lecturers. The Senior Lecturers and Lecturers hold postgraduate qualifications at Masters and/or PhD level in the relevant field and possess experience in teaching at higher education levels. The visiting staff, also with postgraduate qualifications, is drawn from among the experienced academicians and professionals in the country.

Teaching and learning

The teaching methodology at RIC consists of lectures, interactive learning and self-learning. In general, a minimum of one-third of the contact hours in each course unit are allocated for tutorial and discussion classes, while the students in the Diploma programmes receive more time for tutorial and discussion classes.

Modern techniques as well as IT facilities are widely used in the teaching and learning process at RIC.

Students receive study guides and past examination papers with guidelines to answers for self-preparation prior to lectures and for self-learning. They can also refer to the recommended textbooks and supplementary reading material available at the RIC library and on the Internet.

Library

The RIC Library is a fully-furnished and automated academic library designed for undergraduate studies. The Library has a collection of over 12,000 books in multiple copies and CDs, which cover the essential textbooks, supplementary books and other recommended reading material of the study programmes.

The library is equipped with a computerized library catalogue and internet facility. In addition, the students can have access to the on-line databases and encyclopedias, on request. Students reading for the degrees and Diplomas of the University of London have on-line access to the University of London Library as well.

Computer Laboratory

Computer facilities are available at the Computer unit equipped with a Local Area Network with workstations, Internet facility and the modern state-of-the art technology and software. Each undergraduate student should obtain a User Account and Password to access the Network.
